Women and the Crime: defining the modern Indian society
Dr. Jiwan Devi*
A woman frame-worked, as a wife, a mother, a sister or any other relation is a key-holder in the family. World can never be complete without a woman. Economic and religious considerations drove women to be in the category of a weaker section of the society. Today the intolerant society has made them the victims of sexual and domestic crimes like rape, eve teasing, female infanticide, domestic violence, child marriage, kidnapping and acid throwing etc. Every society formulates laws to secure the lives of the masses. In India, we hear the heinous cases like Nirbhaya and also the changes in Juvenile laws being made thereafter. This indicates the rise in crime index as well as the judicial initiatives to deal with them.
This paper covers the physical, emotional, social and economic dimensions involved in these crimes against women. For better understanding besides several readings, Justice J S Verma Committee report has been made the base of the present study. This report is being considered world-wide having a deep impact on international understanding of crime and prevention. This paper is an attempt to understand the societal outlook on crime against fair-sex and preventive measures being taken by the state and judiciary.
Keywords: rape and domestic violence.
