With the rise in amount of content that
is created and shared by organizations, it becomes plausible why almost all universities
are adopting content management systems (CMS) to manage their web content. CMSs
have proved over years to be more effective in creating, managing and
publishing content. Web applications built using CMS are said to be user
friendly and can be implemented easily by their users. However as technologies
advance CMS are becoming more robust and complex in features which prove
unfriendly to most users especially the novice. The outcome has been failed
projects or underperforming web applications. A review of literature reveals
that most CMS projects tend to experience slow webpage performance either
caused by the following factors: Un-optimized Images, Content Served Without
HTTP Compression, Combinable CSS Images, Images Without Caching Information,
On-the-fly technology caused by separating content and the structure, file
format and or complexity in CMS structure which makes them bulky resulting to
underperformance of CMS websites. The study seeks to identify the best
optimization strategies of CMSs and develop a CMS optimization framework that
will improve performance of organizations websites. The specific objectives for
the study shall be: to establish the performance of CMSs in their default
settings, to investigate strategies that determine the performance of CMSs
websites, to compare performance of various optimization strategies as applied
to CMS websites and develop a CMS optimization framework based on the best
performing optimization strategies. The study will take place in Moi University
main campus whose servers will provide environment for carrying out
experiments. The researcher will use experimental research design to collect quantitative
data. The performance of the three most popular CMSs will be investigated
through various tests using Firebug, Yslow and GooglePage Speed Insight
performance testing tools. Data collected will be analyzed and presented using
statistical methods such as totals, averages, frequencies, speed, tables and
graphs where applicable. Using the results the researcher will develop a CMS
optimization framework for organizations websites. The framework seeks to eliminate
the challenges of slow web page load, web page render time and server respond
time inorder to achieve high CMS website performance.
