Shakespeare was an English artist, dramatist and performer, generally viewed as

movements in scholarship and performance. His plays remain highly famous and
are always examined, performed and reinterpreted in differing social and
political settings all through the world.

      In Othello, Shakespeare creates an effective
dramatization of a marriage that starts with interest between the extraordinary
Moor Othello and the Venetian woman Desdemona, with elopement, and with serious
common dedication and that closure precipitately with desirous fierceness and
violent deaths. He sets this story in the romantic world of the Mediterranean,
moving the action from Venice to the island of Cyprus and giving it even more intriguing
shading with stories of Othello’s African past. Shakespeare builds huge numbers
of contrasts his hero and heroine such contrasts of cultural background, of
age, of race that one should not, maybe, be shocked that the marriage closes
unfortunately. But most people who read the play feel that the love that the
play presents between Othello and Desdemona is so strong to the point that it
would have beaten every one of these distinctions were it not for the words and
actions of Othello’s standard-bearer, Iago, who hates Othello and sets out to
destroy him by destroying his love for Desdemona. As Othello surrenders to
Iago’s insinuations that Desdemona is unfaithful, fascination which overwhelms the
early acts of the play turns to horror, particularly for the readers. We are
confronted by spectacles of a generous and trusting Othello in the grip of
Iago’s plans; of an innocent Desdemona, who has surrendered herself up completely
to her love for Othello just to be subjected to his appalling verbal and
physical strikes, the result of Othello’s mixed up feelings about her

of Othello over the last 400 years. In an article Critical approaches to

approaches which are new historicist, feminist, Marxist.
