This solitary occurrence and in a few examples

This assignment will
define childhood sexual abuse and review the brunt it can have, explore the
long term effects and symptoms associated with childhood sexual abuse, and
discuss the effects it has on the parents and close relatives to the survivor
of sexual abuse. I will also look mainly at the literature of childhood sexual
abuse and how it is important to point out that although research has shown
there to be significant relationships between long-term effect variables and
childhood sexual abuse, each victim’s responses and experiences will not be the
same. Although it is often viewed as a traumatic experience, there is no single
symptom among all survivors and it is important for clinicians to focus on the
individual needs of the client.

Child abuse can be
categorised into four different types: neglect, emotional abuse, physical abuse
and sexual abuse. A child may be subjected to one or more forms of abuse at any
given time. Abuse and neglect can occur within the family, in the community or
in an institutional setting. Childhood sexual abuse is a subject that has
received much attention in recent years. Twenty-eight to 33% of women and 12 to
18% of men were victims of childhood or adolescent sexual abuse (Roland, 2002,
as cited in Long, Burnett, & Thomas, 2006). Child sexual abuse has been
defined in array of ways through pieces of literature, with more precise
definitions limiting child sexual abuse to abuse which involves physical
contact such as fondling, oral genital contact and even intercourse. Broader
definitions include non-contact abuse such as voyeurism, exhibitionism and
exposer to adult sexual activities, pornography or online victimization.
Furthermore when discussing the sexual victimization of youth from a broad
perspective a variety of terms may be used including ‘sexual abuse’, ‘sexual
assault’, ‘rape’ and ‘sexual harassment’ and even online ‘sexual harassment or
socialization’. Child sexual abuse may cover a wide range of damaging
activities. It rarely includes only a solitary occurrence and in a few examples
happens over various years. Child sexual abuse mainly occurs inside the family,
the majority of sexual abuse happens in childhood, with incest being the most
common form (Courtois, 1996, as cited in Maltz, 2002) including older brother
and sisters and more distant family individuals. Cases of sexual abuse mainly
come to light through disclosure by the child or his or her siblings/friends,
from the suspicions of an adult, and/or by physical symptoms. According to
