In its early days, it became one

In my essay, I’ll be talking about La Mer composed by Claudy Debussy. La Mer which means “the sea” is a composition where it highlights the representation about sea. The description on the richness of the sea is the main theme in this masterpiece by Claudy Debussy. Claudy Debussy or Claude-Achille Debussy by his birth name is a French composer who is related to the movement of Impressionism in music. Claudy Debussy was called the chevalier of the legion in honor in 1903 for his contribution and dedication towards music. He was not only well known as a music composer but he was known for his prominent French literary style of his period which is known as the Symbolism which presented him as an active cultural participant as well(Harttman,2003).  Claudy Debussy is well appreciated for his use of non-traditional scales in his compositions. In spite of the fact that La Mer was not recognised during its early days, it became one of Debusssy’s best piece after few years for its touch and feel of metaphors in it. La Mer, the orchestral composition of Debussy was started in 1903 and was completed in march 1905. This masterpiece was premiered in Paris on October 15,1905 by the Lamoureux Orchestra. La Mer is called the complex work of art because it comprises the three symphonic sketches.La Mer which is composed of the three symphonic sketches namely “De l’aube à midi sur la mer” which means from dawn to noon on the sea, “Jeux de vagues” meaning play of waves  and the third one is “Dialogue du vent et de la mer” which denotes dialogue of the wind and sea. The first sketch “De l’aube à midi sur la mer” highlights the dramatic change of atmosphere at the seaside where it clearly depicts the the environmental atmosphere at the sea from dawn to noon. The rising of the sun over the sea is metaphorically described with the tones and shifting of rhythms. Mark De Voto stated that this first sketch in La Mer has clearly touched all the dimensions of movements from a late Romantic symphony(Marcus,2009). This statement of Mark De Voto can be clearly amalgamated with Debussy’s history. Debussy being the child of the Romantic era, an era where artistic and musical movement was at peak. The touch of the romanticism is notable in the first sketch of La Mer where it creates the periodic shifting of tonalities. The movement is analysed with its key signatures in 4 sections which are bars 1-30, which consists 2 sharps are used as an introduction, bars from 31-83 with 5 flats shows the first section, bars 84-121 with two flats are used in the second section and bars 122 to the end at 141 with 5 flats again are a short final section or known as coda. An evident conversion is seen in its rhythms. The  first sketch of this piece is concluded with a triumphant chorale scored for brass(Zovluck,2010).
