I am passionately interested in pursuing graduate studies in civil and environmental engineering (water resources specialty) at the University of Maryland, College Park. Water Resources is the area I have come to find most exciting and practically satisfying which combines Engineering, Earth Science and Mathematics. I strongly believe that knowledge acquired in civil and environmental engineering would help me to effectively and efficiently employ modern methods, practices and technologies such as the use of geographic information system (GIS) and remote sensing to solve and provide sustainable solutions to the problems related to water resources and the environment which includes increasing water crises, water mismanagement, floods and water pollution that is facing Ghana, the African continent and the world at large.I have the desire to acquire knowledge and qualifications in civil and environmental engineering with the goal to promote sustainable water resource management, prevent flooding and mitigate disaster. My four-year undergraduate program in engineering coupled with industry and research experience has equipped me with a solid foundation that will help me succeed as a graduate student. During my internship at Goldfields Ghana Limited Tarkwa Mine, I measured water levels in pits to inform management on the need to manage the water and distribute it to local communities. Currently, as a teaching assistant with the Geomatic Engineering Department of the University of Mines and Technology, Ghana, I assist faculty on application of GIS and remote sensing technology to estimate the terrestrial hydrology for Ghana as well as the application of these technologies for climate studies. Graduate studies will help broaden my perspectives and give me new ideas that will enable me to provide innovative and sustainable measures to support the marginalized people in my local community, my country, Ghana, and the world at large.I strongly believe that the university has outstanding and dedicated faculty combined with cutting-edge research facilities which is paramount to the delivery of quality education. I have discussed my interest in the field of civil and environmental engineering with Dr. Barton Forman. Dr. Forman has expressed his desire to be my advisor when I secure admission into the graduate program.I strongly believe that your university would be an ideal place for me to pursue my graduate studies in the field of civil and environmental engineering. My strong academic background and intellectual ability coupled with the will to perform and deliver are the key factors that will help me succeed as I embark on graduate studies and contribute immensely to the university’s research work. It will, therefore, be a great honor to secure admission to pursue graduate studies and work with faculty at University of Maryland, College Park.
