Humans are getting busier and lazier. No one

Humans are getting busier and lazier. No one wants to do the everyday chores to keep clean and healthy households. Doing the dishes, vacuuming the floor, washing the windows, folding laundry, mopping the floor, cleaning the gutters, mowing the lawn etc. Is there a solution? Massy-Beresford (2017) states that “Yet there’s hope marching over the horizon, in the form of robots.” (para. 4). Many companies have already built robots to make things more convenient for humans. According Betty Home Gardens doing the laundry is one of the top five most hated household chore. How can robots be used to make folding laundry quicker and easier?Robots can do tons of different things. Their activities can vary from playing beer pong to touching a phone to watering your lawn. Most robots will do helpful things like rocking your baby or cleaning the grill after a barbecue party. But some robots do things just for fun. For example, Bishop (2017) explains that robots have been made to jump over obstacles. Jumping over obstacles isn’t exactly helpful but is still a big achievement for robots (para. 7). Robots can also help out with heavy duty jobs like moving heavy boxes. University of Tokyo’s JSK Laboratory built a robot that pushes boxes by leaning on them with it’s back and pushing with its legs (Bishop, 2017, para. 2). Not only can robots do jobs that humans can’t do, they can also do jobs human don’t want to do. For example, the Litter Robot LRII is a robot that cleans cat litter automatically (T., 2016, para. 14). Robots have been used for many years and have evolved greatly. They are now a part of everyday life. Robots aren’t just used for chores. They are also used for playing. Many robotic toys have been created for children’s entertainment. According to Hyde (2018), one of the most loved robotic toy is the Wonder Workshop Dash Robot which is a robot that can be voice controlled and/or programed to do different ‘quests’ (para. 2). Another robot toy that can be played with outside, is the Sphero Ollie which is an extremely durable robot that can perform many stunts outdoors (Hyde, 2018, para. 8). Not all toys have to be extremely hands on. The Anki Cozmo can help distract people when bored, cheer people up, and recognize many other things (Hyde, 2018, para. 9). Robots can be a great device to distract little kids (and older kids too) while still teaching important skills. One of the most common uses of robots is cleaning. iRobot’s Braava 380t can be used to vacuum and mop floors (T., 2016, para. 3). The Scrubbing Bubbles Automatic Shower Cleaner cleans shower heads (hence the name), with a press of a button. It sprays a cleaning solution that fights mildew and mold (T., 2016, para. 16). Another iRobot product is the Looj 330 which helps clean gutters. But to use this product, the user still has to climb up a ladder to reach the gutters. It’s still an improvement though (T., 2016, para. 11). Betty Home Gardens (2016) claims that cleaning is one of the top three least favorite household chore (para. 2) and now, many of these problems have been solved.”The elderly, a group notoriously indifferent to new technology, now finds itself as a target market for the growing robotics industry” (Companies, 2017, para. 1). Many different robots have been made to make life easier for the elderly. Both physically and mentally. Physically, robots, like Toyota’s “Human Support Robot” have been programmed to pick things up, fetch things, and open doors (Companies, 2017, video). Mentally, robots can help cheer up seniors and sense irregularity in behavior (Massy-Beresford, 2017, para. 6). Robots can also help the elderly keep an orderly schedule. It can make sure seniors are eating regularly, remind them to take medicine and even dispense pills for them (Matuszek, 2017, para. 9 and 10). Along with mentally and physically helping seniors, robots can also fold towels, follow recipes, lift people out of chairs and beds, relieve loneliness, greet visitors and much more (Matuszek, 2017 para. 9, 10, and 11). Matuszek (2017) says “Robotics is one of the hottest areas in the tech world but winning over senior citizens won’t be easy” (Para. 23). Robots still have a long way to go. Many more robots will be created to make life easier. One dog-robot that is launching soon is the Boston Dynamics SpotMini which is a robot that can bring someone a drink, climb the stairs, walk under a table, get up after falling, and (for now) load one glass into the dishwasher (Dynamics, 2016, para. 1, 2, and 3). According to Huen (2016), another robot coming later this year, can cook over 100 different meals and clean up after itself (para. 1, 2, and 14). Lastly, the Laundroid is a robot that folds laundry using artificial intelligence (AI). The clothes is put in the machine and the machine uses AI to identify the shape of the clothes and then determines the best way to fold it (Lee, 2018, para. 6). Many companies already have ideas for more robots and in just a couple years, humans will have one less chore to do.Laundry folding is one of the most hated chore, can it be made easier and quicker? Robots have evolved over the years and have learned to do many different things. Not only do they do chores, they can also act as toys for children. But, one of the most common uses of robots is cleaning, robots can help vacuum, wash, and sort many different things. Robots have also been used to assist the elderly both physically and mentally. And in the future, many more robots will be created to help humanity. This research will be used to create a robot that makes folding laundry quicker and easier.
