CHAPTER 1 The Problem and it’s Background This Chapter presents the introduction, The background of the study, Statement of the problem,The scope and delimitation,Significance of the study ,Definition of terms and The Review on Related Literature .The research is all about the Perception of HUMSS students as perceived by other strand; A proposed guidelines for sustainability of fairness and equality of Eclaro Academy. 1.1 INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY Discrimination is very complex. Discrimination is very common in all society,whether they do it intentionally or not,people discriminates to each other. Discrimination is a natural thing that humans do.It begins in the mind and if they do it intentionally base on their decisions or prejudices that is wrong.Fight against discrimination has an ongoing process and in order for them to continue the battling against discrimination,they should understand the different types of discrimination that exist nowadays.What causes discrimination?and What can we do to stop it?.Being discriminate is not really good,it lowers person’s personality and causes suicidal and etc. Students encounter or experienced being discriminated, underestimated and being compared to other strands as the K-12 program was implemented last 2013 in our country.The Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMSS) is a program or strand that some might take for granted or consider it underrated. This is designed equally to be at part with other strands. Unfortunately, some don’t see it that way.HUMSS strand is for those who consider taking up Education, Journalism,Communication Arts, Liberal Arts and other Social Science courses. HUMSS strand also focuses on communication skills. Some may think that it is hard to take. Some even see this strand as less interesting because of its specialized subjects like Philippine Politics and Governance, World Religions and Belief System, and Social Sciences. In other words, some think that it is “just” a basic strand.Compared with all strands that the K-12 is offering, such as STEM , ABM, GAS and HUMSS, it is presumed that HUMSS is mostly discriminated and underestimated. This Study will be conducted at Eclaro Academy,one the schools in Quezon City,where this school offering Grade 11 and Grade 12,where lot of students enrolled.This school is one of the schools offering the four strands including the Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMSS) Strand where the students confused why HUMSS Strand is being compared and underrated. The importance of better understanding the role of discrimination is predicting ethnic minority children’s developmental outcomes (Farkas,2003) a review of educational disparities.The Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMSS) strand is program or strand that some take for granted or consider it underrated.This is designed equally to be at part with other strands. Unfortunately, some don’t see it that way.The Humanities have been forced to disguise both from themselves and their students,why their subject really matter,for the sake of attracting money and prestige in world obsessed by the achievements of science.(Alain de Botton) If not for this strand (HUMSS), We wouldn’t have our psychologists,political scientist,demographers, historians. People serve it’s purpose in this world.In HUMSS strand we will be much more politically and socially aware,we were finally taught how to think and not what think. In total , they’ve learned a lot about social,political,economic, psychological and sociological realities in our country and in our world today and history and that’s not easy as the other what thinking in HUMSS strand . In this research, Grade 11 HUMSS students experiencing discrimination and underrating because of the strand.The main objective is to stop the discrimination and they want to prove that they are wrong,being in HUMSS strand is not easy like a sandwich even though you won’t encounter too much numbers but in turn you will encounter tons of hands out and paper works.They want to change their taught about the HUMSS strand. In this research the mainly goals is to discuss to those Junior High School (JHS) students who will taking Senior High School (SHS), they want to showcase that being in Humanities and Social Sciences(HUMSS) strand is equally to other strands.That if other strand having Mathematics subject HUMSS strand have too,if they have Science subject HUMSS strand have too.Being in HUMSS it doesn’t mean you don’t have future.In HUMSS you will have a lot of opportunities in the future. In other words, some think that it is “just” a basic strand.Compared with all strands that the K-12 is offering, such as STEM , ABM, GAS and HUMSS, it is presumed that HUMSS is mostly discriminated and underestimated.But while some think that choosing HUMSS is probably the easiest way to survive Senior High School, they are wrong. As stated above, this strand focuses on language and speech which means two things: a dealing with too many numbers are very rare, but b in turn, dealing with tons of research and readings on various subjects is a must. At the end of the day, humanities is not about business, but about the “heart”.(Sarenas, 2015)HUMSS gears towards improving the students’ reading, writing and speaking skills because students aspire to become members of the society who will be dealing with a lot people (e.g. teacher, psychologist, lawyer, etc.). In HUMSS, one could be given the chance to make a mark in the world. The calling of the humanities is to make us truly human in the best sense of the word (J. Irwin Miller).HUMSS is a strand that covers a broad range of interest. It deals with people who are willing to learn about the society and the environment. It is useful to understand the different point of views of every person. HUMSS students are diverse mixed of people who have creative minds to define their knowledge through words, which develops more social and moral excellence.Though some think HUMSS is a very easy strand to take, it is actually deep to understand. It covers more use of logic and critical thinking. HUMSS is divided into two: Humanities and Social Sciences. Humanities deals with human culture. It involves philosophy, history, and literature and focuses on basic human experiences. While Social Sciences focuses on human society and human relations.HUMSS students can apply the knowledge on linguistics, psychology, economics, anthropology, history, etc.Overall, HUMSS is an academic strand that is way powerful just like the other strands, too. It can mold future teachers, lawyers, army/military, psychologist, journalist, politicians, and most of all, a president of the country. HUMSS offers endless possibilities to easily understand the complexities of humanity. HUMSS, just like other strands, is the breeding ground of intellectual beings. It is a home of unique and equally talented students of the society.
