Augmented
reality (AR) can be defined as ability to take information through real-world
environment by adding computer-generated information and running jointly to
give three dimensional output. AR provides virtual information to the user’s
adjacent environment and helps the user communicate with the real world making
their life easier. Augmented reality adds useful virtual information over the
real world in real time and engages the user in a virtual world e.g.: the app
Roomle helps the user see the furnished interior live in their wished location from
every perspective and choose the right furniture they want to have. AR represents
useful digital information in real world making the environment valuable input
source and is being widely used for entertainment e.g.: Pokémon GO is an AR
game where player catches different species based on the location of the user. (Carmigniani, et al., 2011)
(Carmigniani & Furht, 2011) Augmented reality can be described
as one of the technologies that can develop a
“next generation, reality- based interface” as users can bring their

The number of applications
utilizing augmented reality is increasing and the results are seen in different
fields. AR is being implemented in medical learning & training (for
training in surgery aid), education e.g.: augmented book, commerce,
entertainment and many more. AR is still in its initial stage of development
and the potential is never ending. Researchers have been working on different
challenges to make the most use of AR like environment, display device, content
management and user location. (Krevelen & Poelman, 2010)

Augmented Reality (AR) is the change in real
and virtual environment where users are completely immersed in an artificial
environment. AR is commonly called virtual environment (VE) as it combines the

virtual world which is interactive in real
time and gives the output in three dimensions. Photorealistic virtual 3D
objects are not augmented reality as they are not interactive in real time. The
users can’t differentiate the real world around him as virtual objects is set
over the real world. It appears that the virtual and real object exist in the
real place at the real time. AR is an intermediate between the virtual and the
real world that adds extra element to the reality instead of completely replacing
it. (Milgram & Kishino, 1944a) (Milgram, et al., 1944b).. Here’s an example of an app named Amikasa
3D Room Designer which lets user’s build, restyle, and redecorate their rooms
using furniture, flooring and wall colors from real brands. It makes users
creative and do the task in an easy way saving time and money. The AR system
mainly carries out four tasks, they are scene capture which recognize the
reality to be boosted, scene identification to classify the scenarios, scene
processing to calculate the corresponding space for virtual element and
visualization scene to pass the projected 3D object on the screen. (Cai, et al., 2012) (López, et al., 2010)

 

 

 

Augmented
Reality is known to add virtual information to the real environment, but it may
also be able to remove or hide the real-world objects which might be hard in
doing interactively. Researches have been working to blend virtual, real object
and graphics which might apply for all senses and not just sight. Sound can be
added in AR to make it more interactive. (Durlach & Mavor, 1995)  Haptic is also a possible example which
include gloves with devices to provide real sensation feedback as an
interaction involving touch. For example: a user might run his hand with gloves
device on a virtual desk and the tactile effectors will augment the feel of
desk and the user will be able to sense the nature of the object. (Wellner, 1993) There are basically two choices while building an AR
system, they are optical and video technologies, each has their own advantages
and disadvantages. The optical technologies contain HMDs with optical combiners
in front of the user’s eyes which are partially transmissive to see the real
world and partially reflective to see the virtual object. The combiners acts as
a half silvered mirrors and only lets some lights to enter so that the light
from the monitors can reflect in the user’s eyes. (Holmgren, 1992)  The video technologies contain HMDs
with video cameras which provide the user’s view of the real world, these
cameras blend the reality and virtual world by combining the graphic images produced
by the scene generator. AR system can also be build monitor based and will not require HMD,
instead the output will be displayed in the monitor. (Peuchot, et al., 1995)

Microsoft Innovation Center Nepal (MIC Nepal) is currently active in providing holographic
platform to the young Nepalese Students to innovate with HoloLens and bring
innovative development around the mixed reality. (Suvasini, 2016)

There are very
few AR developers currently in Nepal and they are focusing on tourism sector to
create a unique experience for tourists. (Times, 2015) AR startups are just
beginning and there are couple of AR apps such as Nepal Votes AR and Nepal AR
which are informative apps. AR based game Pokémon GO is famous among Nepali
people where the species of Pokémon are augmented in the real environment and
the goal is to collect them.
