As it can be easily noticed, everything that is surrounding us tends to influence us the most; the media as well. Since they are so ubiquitous that everyone raises their trustworthiness toward them, it is certain to state that media sometimes play an important role in shaping people’s opinions toward things; especially when it comes to sensitive contents such as politics or religion issues, and in this case: Islamophobia. Due to the ability to generate people’s thoughts, they have consecutively risen the Islamophobia issues from time to time. As a result, they certainly impact the society as well as distorting the Muslims in many aspects. According to what Jackson (2010) has stated in his journal that “people learn what to think and how to behave from media sources, viewing information on the news as matter of fact, or the characters on a televised sitcom as models for normal behavior”, it is palpable that people are prone to believe what the media conveys without considering whether that is a truth or not. In the other word, they tend to believe what first comes into their ears. Moreover, Schultze (1992) even stated that “televisions are the most effective propaganda vehicle” since they are available in every household. Let’s imagine that there is a popular news company trying to distribute the contents that are subjective in a negative aspect; as a result, people who consume the news are likely to create various denial stereotypes toward what media conveys. In addition, not only televisions are in charge for creating stereotypes, but social media, internet, or even cartoons can also play a huge role as well. Some people may argue that in order to create the stereotype, it is necessary to have a quite amount of people who are responsible for generating the mutual way of thinking. However, according to what Gottschalk and Greenberg (2011) has claimed in his book that “editorial cartoons effectively illustrate how caricatures of individual Muslims have slipped into stereotypes of all Muslims, often in the service of perpetuating a particular image of the purported American norm”, it can be concluded that, sometimes, in order to raise awareness in the society, it does not require many people, instead, one person is able to create a massive effect to the community. From its ability to shape the society, it can also emphasize the contents of a certain topic, in this case, rising the Islamophobia. According to Nimer (2011), “between one-fourth and one-third of Americans hold negative views of Islam and Muslims after the occurrence of the terrorists’ attacks of September 11, 2001 (9/11) and that has led the opinion leaders, internet bloggers as well as the cable television beginning to use harsh language toward Muslim for the sake of spreading the hatred across the country”. Consequently, people are now holding worse perspectives toward the Muslims and Islam culture. Moreover, some of the media-related companies possess a way of thinking that (Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs – Islamic Studies Department, no date- n.d) “the talk about the religion of Islam is an interesting material which managed to attribute violence and terrorism to the religion of Islam. From that, it has resulted in increasing interest in the Islamic world which has become the source of horror for people in the West”. Due to its ubiquitous of the media, not only the talk on the television affects Muslims’ community, but the internet is also in charge of the situation as well. Since Ekman (2015) has stated in his article that “the internet has facilitated a space where xenophobic viewpoints and racist attitudes towards Muslims are easily disseminated into the public debate”, it cannot be disagreed that internet has been providing a free space to spread the hatred toward many things recently. However, some people may state that media do not distort the Muslims themselves, instead, the media are trying to distribute the truth to the audiences throughout the world. From the former sentence, it is indisputable that some of it is actually the fact; nevertheless, from what Jackson (2010) has stated in his article that “although it is hardly to say that people learn to see Muslims as terrorists from the media, the situation itself does demonstrate that it is popular to associate Muslims with terrorism, and is therefore implied as acceptable of legitimate by American mass media”. According to Saleem (2017), “these negative media representations increase perceptions of Muslims as aggressive, negative emotions towards Muslims, and support forpolicies harming Muslims”, as a result, it is manifest to state that Muslims will be the one to be affected by such news, mostly in the negative ways.Firstly, (Kabir & Bourk, 2012) “in the context of terrorism, those responsible are usually identified as Muslims soon after the occurrence of the event and in most cases, the blame appears without providing confirmed information”. Accordingly, (Kurtishi & Ajdini, 2016) “when the fear and hatred are being spread among the society, the attacks to innocent Muslims around the United States and Europe, vandalism and graphite in their mosques and even killing Muslims citizens” are occurred as they are trying to figure out the solution for protecting themselves. Nowadays, the problem has settled its roots deep enough that it is extremely challenging to find the solution. According to Rauf (2016), “it is critical that we also need to work on and in the media space, because many perceptions are shaped today not only through education but also through the media, which is a continuous means of educating and informing people and shaping their opinions of certain things.” Moreover, the government should also take the action in order to solve the problem; for example, enacting a law that will raise the awareness about distributing only the approved contents as it is likely to make the media companies more careful about their information. To sum up, people tend to believe what the media convey since their omnipresence and dependability. However, some of the contents distributed are sometimes too subjective when it comes to sensitive issues and that has led to creating stereotype to the community. Moreover, media also act as a platform for people to spread their hatred and fear; as a result, it may directly or indirectly impact the society in many aspects.
