According to Dr. Moyard (Mark & Janet 2014)- 1- that hypertension, or high blood pressure is the number one cause of cardiovascular disease. In Hong Kong, heart disease is the third killer causes death in 2016 (Health Fact of Hong Kong) –2- . Nowadays, some people indulge in supplements intend to keep healthy and prevent some diseases like cardiovascular diseases. However,  some of the supplements actually are not as effective as the nutrition claims provided from the supplement manufacturer. Here another three supplements say it would help to prevent cardiovascular diseases. The follow will mention the effectiveness for these three supplements according to the latest scientific evidence.1. Coenzyme Q10Lower risk of CVDs – insufficientCoenzyme Q10 is the one of the most important antioxidant synthesized by the body and produce as a supplement product. For the deficiency in coenzyme Q10 is associated with cardiovascular disease. For the primary prevention of cardiovascular disease, there are study group  conducted in participants at high risk of cardiovascular disease, the result shown the outcome is no reduction in systolic blood pressure and no effect on the total cholesterol, HDL, LDL and triglycerides. Hence there is no evidence of prevention of cardiovascular events. (Nadine, Louise, Daniel, Saverio & Karen, 2013). /5/Recently, there are research said that coenzyme Q10 is protective effect cardiomyopathy of rat heart. However, this is still not proven on human body and lack of further study and support. (Obesity, Fitness & Wellness, 2017).9According to the evidence report that Coenzyme Q10 actually is no convincing to supporting in prevention of cardiovascular disease. There are other study group people who had myocardial infarction within three months. Some of the patient had taken coenzyme Q10 for 12 months. However, the result also shown that there are no statistically significant difference. Thus coenzyme Q10 supplementation are  not convincing that benefit to prevent primary cardiovascular disease. (Shekelle, Morton & Hardy, 2003) / 3/ On other hand, one study quoted that coenzyme Q10 might are secondary reduce cardiovascular mortality but still not proven that to prevent the primary cardiovascular disease. (Jan & Jan,  2016) 4/ 2.Folic Acid Note: Lower risk of CVDs – probable Note: secondary CVD prevention – possible(Patricia, 2017) 6Deficiency in either Folic acid, vitamin B12 and vitamin B6 can lead high blood  homocysteine level. For the high homocysteine may increase the risk of myocardial Infarction or stroke. The effect of primary and secondary prevention of stroke was minimal. However, folic acid supplementation in patients with chronic kidney disease have been failed to show the beneficial in cardiovascular outcome. (Sigal, Tali, Chaim, Yosefy & Yaakov, 2013) 7/In 2007, Inpharma weekly (2007) (10) said Folic acid prevention to cardiovascular disease is not effected. In the same year, there are other medical journal mentioned that folic acid does not prevent cardiovascular disease. (British Medical Journal Publishing Group, 2007). (11) Furthermore, some research show that lowered serum homocysteine levels is associated with lower  incidence of cardiovascular disease , folic acid supplementation in the prevention of cardiovascular disease, coronary heart disease  and stroke. (Yang, Lee, Hon, Ovbiagele &Saver, 2013) -8-Folic acid for cardiovascular diseases prevention may not effect on everyone. However it may help for secondary prevention,In 2017, the latest study shown Folic acid may help for lower homocysteine concentration and prevent stroke and cardiovascular disease. Moreover, folic acid supplementation is apparently reducing the risk of cardiovascular, decrease in the concentration of total homocysteine with folic acid fortification, reducing the blood pressure and total homocysteine levels.However, for the homocysteine concentration to directly reduce the risk of cardiovascular and stroke still is controversial.  (Wan, Xin, Zeng, Jin & Cheng, 2017) (12) 3. Omega 3 Fatty Acid Note: CVD relatedlower risk of CHD – coronary artery disease (primary/secondary) – probable/ possible lower risk of stroke – possible reduces mortality – probablelowers triglycerides – convincing- oklowers blood clotting – convincing Omega 3 is a polyunsaturated fatty acid and already proven it significantly to decrease the risk of unstable angina, myocardial infarction, sudden cardiac death, also death in coronary artery disease and heart failure patients. For the lower triglyceride levels, omega also supported. (Lucas & Dean, 2013) (14) Hence omega 3 is one of the good source to improving cardiovascular health.American heart association (2016) (13)  recommended people should have rich take in omega 3 fatty acids in order strategy to prevent high blood pressure. Mark & Janet said that (2014) (15)as low as 1000 mg milligrams of OMEGA 3 fatty acid it may help for reduce hypertension and prehypertension,  as well reduce triglycerides. Omega 3 has been proven to lowering triglycerides. Hence , for the long term, this is a great helpful to prevent cardiovascular disease event like heart attack and stroke. However, according to the study, omega 3 are failed to lower cardiovascular disease in the people who is higher risk of cardiovascular diseases. As well as lower LDL. High doses of fish oil is may increase LDL as well. In fact, lower LDL still is the most powerful way to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.In summary, omega 3 supplementation has proven to lowering triglycerides and blood clotting to preventing high blood pressure, its help for prevent some kinds of cardiovascular disease. However, for the lower-risk of all cause of mortality, myocardial infarction and stroke. It’s still not yet to prove and considerable controversy.
