The octanol-water
partition coefficient (logKow) is an important parameter when assessing the
environmental fate of pharmaceuticals. Values of logKow indicates a compounds
ability to partition between octanol and water, and therefore can indicate a
compounds solubility. A high Kow value denotes hydrophobicity and a low Kow
denotes hydrophilicity (Miller
et al., 1985). The ERA specifies that following phase I analysis, if a
compound with a logKow below 4.5 should progress to screening in phase II due
to its potential to bioaccumulate (EMA,
2006).
